The government announced legislation allowing people who change their sex to alter their birth certificates. This means they will be able to marry in their adopted sex. Male-to-female cases will also qualify for the state pension earlier.

The European Court of Human Rights ruled that United Kingdom law violates the rights of transsexual people, in particular their right to have their new sex officially recognised.
